Ecosystem services and pressures in European protected areas: divergent views of environmental scientists and managers

Hermann Hummel, Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, Yerseke (NL)

EcoPotential surveyed the view of scientists and managers in mountainous, eg Kalkalpen, and coastal Protected Areas (PA) on major indicators for Ecosystem Services (ES) and pressures. Scientists indicate abiotic and biotic factors being important, yet managers socio-economic and cultural factors. Views have to be integrated, and factors to be harmonised and easy to measure e.g. by Remote Sensing (RS). Methods to assess effectiveness of PA management may help. We will show the different views of managers and scientists, how to harmonise factors, and how socio-cultural ES may be measured by RS.
