Shifting protected area strategies to evidence based governance and management

Engelbert Ruoss, Global Regions Initiative, San Nicolò di Comelico, (IT)

PA governance is dealing with "public goods” targeted to balance conservation and development. Their exceptional assets and high community-development potential ask for innovative deliberative "evidence-based governance” which are multilevel, pluralistic, reflective, transborder, ecological, dynamic and open to changing constraints. Mobilizing the region's potential and applying methods (SDI, NEXUS, SPM) stimulate economy, knowledge development and community interactions. The World Heritage sites Swiss Alps Jungfau-Aletsch (CH), Dolomites (I), Idrjia (SLO), and Biosphere Reserve Entlebuch (CH) are examples of processes focused on inclusive governance.
