Life at the limit under climate change - long term ecological monitoring in the Hohe Tauern National Park

Christian Körner, University of Basel (CH)

In summer 2017, a long-term ecological monitoring program in the Hohe Tauern National Park was launched, with additional sites in South Tyrol and the central Swiss Alps. The aim of this monitoring is to arrive at robust evidence of changes in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in the alpine belt by employing permanent plots, micro-catchments, lakes on an elevational gradient, camcorders, standardized protocols, high spatial replication and a multidisciplinary approach. This presentation will explain the work protocol and discuss the challenge of long term ecological observations in high mountains.
