Where do endemics reside? Endemic beetles in the Gesäuse National Park (Austria) and their relevance for management

Sandra Aurenhammer, OEKOTEAM - Institute for Animal Ecology and Landscape Planning, Graz (AT)

The Gesäuse National Park (Styria, Austria) is a hot spot of endemics in the Eastern Alps. The majority of endemic records dates however from historic sources from the 1940's (H. Franz) and often indicates disjunctive patterns of distribution. Do these patterns only result from missing documentation or can they be explained by the narrow habitat preferences of several endemics? The present study compiles an inventory of 24 endemic beetle species. Furthermore we reveal what is to be considered for their protection also outside the protected area.
