From annual glacier mass balances towards a remote monitoring of near real-time mass changes

Bernhard Hynek, ZAMG - Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics, Vienna (AT)

We want to present a a near real-time information system of the current state of mass change of Austria's biggest glacier, Pasterze and small glaciers around Sonnblick Observatory. The aim of this information system is to provide the public with actual information about glacier change. Therefore a network of automatic stations on the glacier send data in near realtime which are incorporated into a model, that calculates the actual speed of mass change of the glacier. A novel aspect of this model is to include fotos from automatic cameras into the data assimilation.
