Predicting future glacial lakes in Austria - preliminary results

Jan-Christoph Otto, University of Salzburg (AT)

The formation of glacial lakes in many glacierised mountain regions represents a significant manifestation of global warming. New lakes affect the environmental and socio-economic conditions of high mountain systems with implications on water resource management, sediment delivery, natural hazards, energy production, or tourism. We predict future glacial lakes formed in bedrock depressions underneath current glaciers in Austria using ice thickness models. Modelling results are validated using field data and evaluated using observed lakes that have formed within the last 40 years.
