Endemism below the species rank: Population genetics of the European Mudminnow (Umbra krameri)

Josef Wanzenböck, Research Institute for Limnology Mondsee, University of Innsbruck (AT)

The European mudminnow (Umbra krameri) is a rare fish species occurring in only two habitats in Austria, one situated in a national park. The total distribution range of the species is small encompassing the Danube lowlands from Vienna to the delta including the Sava and Tisza Rivers and the delta to the Djestr River. However, Population genetic studies covering populations from the entire range reveal the Austrian population of the National Park Donauauen to be genetically distinct and unique implying enhanced protection needs on the subspecies level. This contribution discusses the challenges of protection of genetically unique populations on the subspecies level including potential threats by invasive species and hybridisation with closely related species and populations.
