'Unterer Eisbodensee' - a good example for the future evolution of glacial lakes in Austria

Hans Wiesenegger, Hydrographic Service, Federal State Government Salzburg (AT)

Glacier retreat, one of the most visible consequences of Climate change, can result in the formation of glacial lakes e.g. "Unterer Eisbodenseeā€ located at Stubacher Sonnblickkees, Austria. The landscape configuration and visual appearance of the high alpine area, situated in National Park Hohe Tauern, has dramatically changed since the lake first appeared in 1987. Ongoing processes are observed by means of repeated laser- scanning, bathymetry and automatic gauging stations. Hydrobiological probing is also carried out in order to investigate alterations in the prestine freshwater system.
