Where do red deer come from and where do they go?

Thomas Rempfler, Swiss National Park, Zernez (CH)

Modern wildlife management requires answers to questions such as: Where are red deer located in winter and what routes do they use to reach their summer feeding grounds? Do they cross country boundaries? Do they use protected areas? And do they behave in the same way year after year? In the red deer project "Ingio via?" the Hunting and Fisheries Department of the canton of Grisons in collaboration with the Swiss National Park maps home ranges and migration routes in the Lower Engadine. This work reveals interesting individual stories about the King of the Forest.
