The management of wild reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in Hardangervidda National Park, Norway

Ole Reidar Vetaas, University of Bergen (NO)

The protection of the largest population of wild reindeer in Europe was one of the main reasons to designate Hardangervidda National Park. Due to the absence of predators, the population is managed by hunting, an activity which attracts tourism in addition to that which is already present in the park through other outdoor activities. This population is also one of the southernmost in the world, and may face multiple challenges associated with a warming climate (i.e. insect harassment and disease). This poses many interesting questions related to the future of wild reindeer management.
