Managing externally caused impacts on protected ecosystems in a long-term perspective - lessons learnt from the Swiss National Park

Thomas Scheurer, Research Council of the Swiss National Park, Bern (CH)

Even if the Swiss National Park is strictly protected since more than 100 years, this area is affected by impacts from outside the Park. Main issues have been traffic, visitors, wildlife, hydropower, deposition or climate change. As well, the Park can impact surrounded areas. These impacts have in common, that the Park has not the authority to tackle them. Strategies for adaptive management regarding issues in and outside the Park have to be developed with external partners. Since its foundation the Swiss National Park has been developing arrangements for managing impacts in and from the Park.
