Advanced livestock protection in protected areas

Leopold Slotta-Bachmayr, University of Salzburg (AT)

Because of the return of large predators protection of livestock is needed. On one hand grazing of livestock is necessary to protect traditionally cultivated landscapes with increased biodiversity, on the other hand traditional methods of livestock protect are available. Traditional use and methods are based on experience long time ago, but science is going on. Knowledge about ecology and behavior of large predators has increased, use of landscape has changed. Therefore we need a modern and integrated concept of livestock protection which allows the coexistence of different forms of land use.
