Waste management in mountain protected areas

Larisa Semernya, UN Environment, Vienna Programme Office, Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention, Vienna (AT)

Protected areas (PA) in mountain regions are increasingly popular tourist destinations. This increases the amount of waste, which is particularly difficult to manage in the mountains because of their remoteness, topography and low temperatures. The new report ‘Waste Management Outlook for Mountain Regions - Sources and Solutions', finds that waste in mountains deserves further attention from scientists, PA managers, policy makers and tourists. The poster ‘Waste management in high altitude protected areas' will present key findings of the report relevant to both scientists and PA managers.
