Old-grown forests of Romania: between conservation and destruction. Case studies: Retezat and Domogled-Cerna Valley National Parks

Iuliana Vijulie, University of Bucharest (RO)

Old-grown forests are extremely vulnerable to socio-economic pressures. Although some are included in protected areas, still face difficulties in terms of conservation action, namely illegal cuttings. We analyzed the contradiction between the aim and objectives of protected areas and economic activities from two national parks. We used GIS techniques and semi-structured interviews. Results revealed the irremediable destruction of virgin forests in certain areas through cuttings that have been justified either by the invasion of Ips typographus, or by the sustainable development of the park.
