Automatic Glacier Monitoring in the Hohe Tauern National Park

Benjamin Robson, University of Bergen (NO)

Satellite data is commonly used for glacier monitoring. Here, we use Sentinel-1 and 2 satellite data within an Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) approach to create an up-to-date and temporally consistent glacier inventory of the Hohe Tauern National Park for 2016. Our classification procedure is as automated as possible, relying on histogram derived thresholds and fuzzy logic. We separate between clean ice, debris-covered ice and delineate the end of season snowline. Our analysis shows that Sentinel imagery can be used to produce up-to-date and near-automatic glacier inventories.
