The AWS Forni: over 10 years of measurements of the glacier energy budget in Stelvio National Park

Antonella Senese, University of Milano (IT)

Installed in 2005, the AWS1 Forni was the first permanent automatic weather station on the ablation tongue of an Italian Glacier. It is located on Forni Glacier, the largest Italian valley glacier in Stelvio National Park. It is part of both the SHARE and WMO Cryonet network and has been continuously monitoring the 7 key climatic parameters identified by the WMO plus the albedo since its inception. A second AWS was installed in 2014 to perform accurate measurements of snow deposition within the WMO SPICE program. Together, they allow estimating the production of glacier meltwater.
